2005 30th Australian Kendo Championships
26th - 27th March 2005
ANU Sports & Leisure Centre, ACT
Congratulations
to all members who competed or graded in the 30th Australian National Kendo
Championships held in
Two NSW
members successfully graded to yondan (4th
Dan) on Easter Friday. Congratulations to Shoko Bunder
(
Kirby
Smith won his 3rd consecutive Open Dan Individuals title, winning the finals
against fellow NSW player Stuart Burke. Dennis HS Kim also came 3rd
in this category.
In the Womens Individuals competition, Vivian Yung came 3rd behind
Kate Sylvester (VIC) and Claire Chen (VIC).
In the Kyu
Individuals event, Kai Huang showed tremendous fighting spirit and
determination when all odds were against him. Despite a heavily bandaged fractured
toe, Kai still managed to defeat all his opponents to reach the semi-finals and
came 3rd in the Kyu event. Little wonder why Kai also won the Fighting Spirit
Award. Adam McNeil from ACT won the Kyu Individuals competition.
The NSW
Dan Team won their pool matches against WA and VIC to reach the finals, where
they met the Queensland Team - the defending Dan Team Champion.
In the Kyu
Team competition, QLD and WA were in the same pool as NSW. NSW won the match
against WA and drew against WA. Unfortunately, NSW could not advance to the
finals because of the point count-back decision and NSW trailed WA by one
point. It was very close. The Kyu Team winner was VIC and WA came 2nd.
In the Womens Team competition, NSW advanced to the finals after
defeating ACT and WA. As usual, it was a NSW vs VIC
finals. However, it was a much closer contest this year. In the end, VIC won
the team match 1-0 over NSW.
On behalf
of NSWKA, I would like to make a special thank you to our State coaches - Paul Rixon sensei and Ted Rixon sensei
for coaching the Dan Team and Michael Payne sensei for coaching the Kyu and Womens Team. They have kindly given off their time to
provide support and guidance to the NSW State Kendo players every week for the
past few months. Thank you for all your hard work and support, Sensei!
